Chelsea, Ed and the Gays of PA

CHELSEA STOPS TRAFFIC ON GAY BAR CRAWL
Posted: Saturday, April 19, 2008 12:47 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: 2008, Clinton

Among Hillary's many achievements i think one of her greatest is how she has brought up Chelsea under extraordinary circumstaces and done such a wonderful job. This Article Proves it.

PHILADELPHIA -- Chelsea Clinton stopped traffic Friday night as she wandered the streets of Philadelphia on a gay bar crawl, winning rave reviews for both her politics and her appearance.

Led around the neighborhood by Gov. Ed Rendell, Chelsea was mobbed by local gays and lesbians, as she walked from one club to the next. They ran up to hug her, posed for pictures and certainly invaded her personal space.

"I grabbed her ass," one young woman exclaimed to her friends after snapping a picture with her arm around the former first daughter.

"Chelsea, the gays love you!" one fan exclaimed, as she took the microphone at Bump, a restaurant and bar that was her first stop. "Oh, gosh, I don't know if everybody loves me," she responded.

Looks like it was a busy night and Chelsea managed to speak to a lot of people.

In all, she visited four bars in Center City, concluding her tour at Woody's, the city's most famous gay bar. Getting from one event to another proved difficult at times, as she was constantly stopped by admirers while walking down the sidewalk. She reached into car windows to shake hands and was followed by several young women who tried to pose for photos on their camera phone, but seemed incapable of properly saving the pictures.

The Other star of this report is Ed Rendell:

Rendell appeared to be in his element. As Chelsea posed for more photos inside Bump, the governor held court outside, quizzing onlookers about Pennsylvania history, and grabbing the phone of one voter to talk to his undecided mother. He acknowledged to the caller that there were two good Democratic candidates, but said he thought Hillary would do a better job.

"OK, governor, don't run my minutes up," the man said, trying to get the phone back from Rendell.

The whole report is very funny and Chelsea comes across amazingly.

Read the whole thing, i think Chelsea just did a great job of getting her mom alot of votes in an important constituency.

Thank you! (2.00 / 2)

This story had me laughing out loud.

"I grabbed her ass"

And the image of Ed Rendell comandeering some guy's phone outside a gay club to talk to his undecided mother: priceless.

Endearment factor just doubled.

It's so sad considering that the Clinton administration featured DOMA as part of their poll-tested, triangulation strategy.

We care about politics because we know politics matters for people's lives and opportunities.

Want to learn something? (2.00 / 4)

You clearly do not understand the context under which DoMA was passed.  So let me explain it to you, and I hope you will take the opportunity to become a little more educated.

At the time, some progressive states were beginning to take steps toward same-sex marriage.  This had conservative states, like Utah, in an uproar.  So they were putting massive pressure on their representatives to enact a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

President Clinton saw the storm brewing.

So he passed DoMA, which did absolutely nothing to impede the progress being made in individual states.  Massachusetts is proof-positive of that.  What it did do, though, was alleviate the pressure for a constitutional ban, which would have been a long-lasting and very damaging effect.

The Clintons are not naive or inexperienced.  They understood the full ramifications of DoMA, and recognized that it did far more good to the gay community than harm.

Most gay folks would tell you the exact same thing.  So please, do a little homework before recycling the same, bitter politics that we're trying to move past.

Re: Want to learn something? (none / 0)

Hi. One of "the gays" here. I can tell you that no gay person I know saw it that way. This was signed during his re-election campaign when Republicans wanted to make gay marriage an issue. He aligned himself with the Republican platform and, to use an overused metaphor, threw us under the bus. This revisionism about enacting laws against gay marriage to save us gays is about as intellectually dishonest as the tripe about Hillary voting for war to further diplomacy. Andrew Sullivan:
The facts are these: under Bill Clinton the rate of discharges of gay people from the military doubled; under Bill Clinton, the Defense Of Marriage Act did not only simply enshrine the pre-existing right of some states not to recognize the civil marriages of other states - as he misleadingly states - but barred all of us gay couples from any rights on a federal level; Bill Clinton cited the Defense of Marriage Act in re-election campaign ads in the South. Even now, he claims that repealing DOMA would lead to more persecution of gays, because more states would allegedly pass anti-gay constitutional amendments. But there are very very few left that could do more to stigmatize gay couples than currently do. And he still resists any defense of gay equality in substance seeing it entirely, as he did in office, as a matter of partisan positioning. Just as he left any mention of any gay people and any gay appointees out of his interminable autobiography, he still will not stand up for gay equality when confronted by the next generation.

Re: Want to learn something? (none / 0)

Sorry, but you do not speak for MOST gay people. And what I do understand is that Hillary is not committed to over turning DOMA, Obama is.
I also underastand how we were thrown under the bus with DADT.

Care to ruin any more positive threads? BILL (NOT HILLARY) Cli made a mistake on DOMA and are now trying to make up for it. If you have a complaint about DOMA, start a thread about it, but as far as I'm concerned, there is no stronger Democratic canidiate still in the race on GLBT rights and talking to the GLBT population than Hillary Clinton. Don't blame her for BILL'S Doma.

Hillary walks the talk, literally.

What other candidate has taken the political risk of walking in a gay pride parade?

It was a positive diary until grego decided to take a swipe at Obama. I don't comment in positive diaries unless someone starts making negative comments.

Re: Chelsea, Ed and the Gays of PA (2.00 / 1)

This is an excellent outreach. As a gay American, it warms my heart to see how much the Clinton campaign has outreached to us as a constituency. On a side note, I don't think I'm the only one who sees an extremely bright future in politics for Chelsea.

I'm quite sure the opponent could not be bothered to get that close to "those people".

Chelsea has made such a positive difference in her mother's campaign. She is living proof of Hillary's sincere care and positive attention.

Honestly what I find bizarre - really the exact opposite of what I'd expect - is that Jenna Bush is a school teacher who went to work for UNICEF and wrote a book about a woman with HIV and Chelsea works at a hedge fund.

I love it.  All of the gay men and lesbians I know, myself included, are voting for Hillary.  Maybe it's her diva-factor.  We all just know she's fabulous.  :-)

Nice!

I honestly don't know any gay American who is voting for Obama.  I guess we help Hillary offset some of Obama's core constituencies.

I don't know any gay people supporting Clinton. Obama's gay support comes from higher educated queers who are more interested in policies then drag queens and fashion.

Ha!

That's not my experience.

Of these non-"higher educated" queers, maybe you didn't know that an enormous segment abhors fashion etc. and is more suited to the periphery of their straight counterparts: sports, beer, cars, etc.

Anyway, very highly-educated gay guy here, not much into fashion, big Hillary supporter.

Unbelievable that someone would accuse you of lying about your education, simply because they can't counter the main thrust of your argument.
