Polar Ice Cap to Completely Melt by September

Yes, you read that right. First covered only by foreign media it has now been picked up by US media, CBS and CNN. They are saying that for the first time in recorded history the North Pole may be completely free of Ice by the end of the Summer.

This seems like a staggering development and although they are saying that it won't have any immediate significant effects, I for one find that hard to believe. For example what happens to the arctic wildlife such as Polar bears? And what about world sea levels?

By now this may have already been diaried but I think it deserves to be kept front and center. This is a BIG DEAL. It's too important to allow to slip off the diary list into oblivion after just a day or two.

Last year does appear to be a freak year statistically:

Unfortunately, freak years leave some lasting effects - increased heat absorption by the sea for example.  It feeds the current situation.

Long term - there's not a lot we can do at this point except try to decrease carbon output and make sure the Arctic doesn't become a big land grab.  I suppose there could be more research on CO2 sinkholes, but unfortunately, that's complicated far beyond my comprehension.

I thought something like this wasn't supossed to happen until 2100. How shocking !Again another reason why we need a new President not a 3rd term

We have been in a cooling trend for ten years, so I'm not exactly sure what could be causing the polar ice caps to melt, if not the temperature.
