Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones Has Died

Sad.

Tubbs Jones, 58, died at 6:12 p.m. after suffering a brain hemorrhage caused by an aneurysm that burst and left her with limited brain function, spokeswoman Eileen Sheil said

"Throughout the course of the day and into this evening, Congresswoman Tubbs Jones' medical condition declined," Sheil said in a statement from the clinic and Tubbs Jones' family.

The liberal Democrat, first elected in 1998, suffered the hemorrhage while driving her car in Cleveland Heights Tuesday night, said Dr. Gus Kious, president of Huron Hospital in East Cleveland.

Best wishes and positive thoughts to the family.

May she rest in peace and her legacy live on thru others.

Hell's bells, even the GOP didn't have to crucify Eisenhower's record in order to make Reagan their 'saint'. We can have two great ones, you know?

I met her, too, on a plane going from NY to Cleveland.

She said she was having the time of her life stumping for HRC.

Heartbreaking.

Clinton family's statement (2.00 / 2)

8/20/2008
Statement of Former President William J. Clinton, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton on the Passing of Chairwoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones

There are few words to express the shock we feel at this time. Our deepest condolences are with Stephanie's son, Mervyn, her family, and her many loved ones, friends, and supporters.

Stephanie's friendship meant the world to us, a friendship that deepened through every trial and challenge. We could always count on her to be a shoulder on which to lean, an ear to bend, a voice to reassure. Over the course of many years, with many ups and many downs, Stephanie was right by our side-unwavering, indefatigable.

It was that fighting spirit-safely stowed behind her disarming smile, backed by so much integrity and fiery intelligence-that allowed Stephanie to rise from modest beginnings, to succeed in public service, to become a one-woman force for progress in our country.

All of us who were lucky to know her and love her can only hope now to live like her-to be as passionate, loyal, hard charging, and joyful in life's pursuits.

Stephanie was one of a kind. We will miss our friend always.

While I could sit in church and pray all I want, I wouldn't be fulfilling God's will unless I went out and did the Lord's work ~ Barack Obama

Here's Obama's: (none / 0)

"Michelle and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones. Stephanie was an extraordinary American and an outstanding public servant. It wasn't enough for her just to break barriers in her own life. She was also determined to bring opportunity to all those who had been overlooked and left behind - and in Stephanie, they had a fearless friend and unyielding advocate. It was an honor to serve with Stephanie in Congress, and I know her legacy will live on in all those who walk the trails she blazed and walk through the doors she opened. Our hearts and prayers are with all those who knew and loved her."

Re: Congresswoman Jones Has Died (none / 0)

The Lord, it's said, works in mysterious ways. This has to be one of those mystical moments.

May Stephanie rest in eternal peace and her family and close friends soon find comfort and overcome their grief from her all to soon passing.

Rough Congress (none / 0)

It feels like this has happened far more often this Congress than previous ones: first we lost Juanita Millender-McDonald, and Charlie Norwood passed, and Paul Gillmor, and now this heartbreak.

And the former members we lost, like John Seiberling and Father Drinian, were hard, too.  Tough couple of years.

Rest in peace, Congresswoman, and please keep an eye on us.

Re: Rough Congress (none / 0)

Yeah your right Jay R, quite a few members of Congress have died during the 110th session, all of them tragic, including Stephanie Tubbs Jones.

Politically her seat is safe for the Democrats but when will the vacancy be filled? I'm going to assume that its really too late for Special Elections and that the special election the same day as the General Elections on November 4th.

It's up to Governor Strickland (none / 0)

I would imagine he'd hold a special election to coincide with the GE, it makes sense.

It also gets her successor in office before the start of the next Congress.

We lost a lot (none / 0)

Don't forget, we lost Julia Carson too.

And Jo Ann Davis lost her battle with breast cancer, which is something I have become all too familiar within my family.

Re: Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones Has Died (none / 0)

I am glad that most commentators on this site have the courtesy to at least wait until after her funeral to begin speculating about the political impact of her death on the democratic majority in Congress. Can we all agree the decent thing is to honor her first then worry about it affects our objectives somewhere down the road.
